We are excited to announce that the Velma Teague Library will be getting a $7.9 million upgrade and moving to a new location at the Promenade at Palmaire, at 5835 W Palmaire Avenue! The new location will be just one block north of the existing facility.
On October 22, 2024, the City Council provided direction to move forward with a construction project to provide patrons with a new state-of-the-art library to meet your needs today and into the future. Our goal is to provide the Velma Teague community with access to the best technology, equipment, and amenities available in our library system. The legacy and history of the Velma Teague Library will be both honored and elevated in this process.
In addition to the library renovation and relocation, this project includes $1.5 million to upgrade the newly created open space in Murphy Park. This unique opportunity allows the city to create an amazing new library and an even more awesome park at the same time. We expect that the new Velma Teague Library and Murphy Park will be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
We have prepared a list of Frequently Asked Questions to provide you with more detail about what is happening and why and we encourage you to check it out. We expect to undertake this project immediately and minimize operational impacts for Velma Teague patrons as much as we possibly can.
