Writer in Residence Online with Amy K. Nichols - July-August 2020Glendale Public Library is hosting an online Writer in Residence, who is available to provide instruction to aspiring authors via video conferencing. Get free expert advice on your writing by booking a thirty-minute one-on-one appointment, or attend a workshop to learn new skills in craft and publishing. All experience levels are welcome. Meet with our Writer in Residence and get on your way to starting, finishing, polishing, or publishing your own story.

Amy K. Nichols is the author of the YA science fiction novels Now That You’re Here and While You Were Gone, published by Knopf BFYR/Penguin Random House. She served as a Teaching Associate with the Your Novel Year program at the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing, as well as the Writer in Residence for the Glendale Public Library. Insatiably curious, Amy dabbles in art and quantum physics, and has a long list of things to do before she dies. She lives with her family outside Phoenix, AZ. Visit her website at amyknichols.com.

Meet via Zoom with our Writer in Residence for writing advice or manuscript review. Sessions are limited to 30 minutes at a time and one session per week.     Few things can tank a story faster than bad dialogue. Good dialogue, however, can make a story soar. In this workshop we’ll examine the powerful role dialogue plays in fiction and learn how to write dialogue that not only sounds realistic but creates resonance, intrigue and depth in your work.

    Many aspire to write and publish stories for young audiences, but few realize how nuanced writing for children can be. This workshop will address the technical aspects of writing for various reading levels as well as how to write stories that capture the attention and imagination of this surprisingly discriminating audience.

In this workshop we’ll identify the five pieces of information every pitch needs, look at sample elevator pitches, and craft pitches for the stories we’re currently working on and wanting to sell.
